Matt is one of the few guides that you will find that has been born and raised right here in Boca Grande. He works in Boca Grande year round guiding and commercial fishing full time. Fishing is not a part time job for Matt. It is his way of life.

Not only is he a native of the area, but behind him is a long history angling in these gulf waters. Both of Matt's parents come from historic fishing families. His father, Dick Coleman, is a member of a family that traces its fishing roots back to the 1870's. Dick specializes in off-shore (grouper, mackerel, kingfish, etc.) and tarpon guided trips. Matt began learning about fishing both for sport and commercial purposes under his dad's tutelage when he was very young.

His mother, Leslie (Joiner) Coleman, grew up in a fishing family that dates back to the early 1900's. Her father, Donald Joiner, was an active fisherman and guide both in Boca Grande and the Keys. Leslie's mother, Isabelle (Whidden) Joiner, currently co-owns and operates the historical landmark Whidden's Marina which was built by Matt's great grandfather, Sam Whidden.

Matt's entire family extending to brother, uncle, and cousins are involved in the fishing business here in Boca Grande. You can rest assured that with all this experience and knowledge, Matt Coleman is the captain you need to guide you through these local waters to these legendary sport fish.

Matt has been USCG licensed since 1998. He is a member of the Boca Grande Fishing Guides Association and has been a director for the period covering 2000-2002. He is also a member of the Boca Grande Chamber of Commerce. He fishes local tournaments including The World's Richest Tarpon Tournament, Hollinswood tournaments, and various flats tournaments. His team placed 1st for largest redfish in the 2001 Linesiders Invitational tournament held at Punta Gorda, FL. Matt also contributes to his community by assisting with cleaning up debris from the bottom of the pass and being a Charlotte Harbor Estuary water quality monitoring volunteer. He has also assisted local research biologists from Mote Marine and Florida Marine Research Institute.
